Comme le suggère le titre de l’exposition « Paradis Parfumé » il tente de tisser des liens entre le bonheur et l’idéal inaccessible, la violence et la volupté, entre le peintre et son tableau. Préférant lui-même s’affranchir d’un courant ou d’une école artistique, David West est avant tout un passionné, la peinture en tant que medium, du plaisir pur dans le geste. Le style est nerveux, sec, son pinceau vif et saisissant, nous transportent dans un jardin d’Eden contemporain, autour des thèmes de la ville, de la musique, des femmes, de la nuit.

David West éclate l’espace, fait vibrer les corps et la narration, laissant place à la subjectivité de chacun, chaque composition comme autant de visions ambiguës et de témoignages sur notre époque.

« David West est le genre d’artiste qu’on a pour habitude d’appeler à New York « un peintre ». C’était alors à l’époque une grande distinction, durement gagnée. De Kooning était un peintre, Franz Kline ne l’était peut être pas, Rothko était un peintre, Barnett Newman était un conceptuel qui travaillait la peinture. C’est une chose presque indéfinissable, mais vous le comprenez sans que j’ai trop à vous l’expliquer, car vous pouvez simplement le voir et le sentir vous-même. »

Sur une proposition de Robert Montgomery, la Galerie Nuke expose pour la première fois cette série de peintures de l’artiste David West, produites entre 2005 et 2013. Paysages et portraits, colorées et complexes, oniriques et contemporaines, ses oeuvres ne laisseront pas le spectateur indifférent.

At the heart of the debate about the function of painting of his time, David West grows away from morality, proclaims it entirely, intends to use it as beauty and not as truth.
As suggested in the title of the exhibition « Paradis Parfumé », the artist tries to find links between happiness and inaccessible ideal, violence and sensuality, the painter and his painting.
David prefers to free himself from any artistic movement and is more than anything passionate about painting as a medium, about the pleasure of its pure gesture.The style is edgy, dry, sometimes tortured, it is not about embellishment.
His paintbrush is vivid and biting. It brings us to a contemporary garden of Eden, dealing with subject as the city, the women, the music, the night …
David West explodes the space, makes bodies and narration vibrate, making room for the subjectivity of anybody. Every composition is an ambiguous vision and a testament of our time.

Curated by Robert Montgomery, Nuke Gallery shows for the first time a series of paintings, produced by David West between 2005 and 2013. Landscapes and portraits, colorful and complex, dreamlike and contemporary, his paintings will not leave the spectator indifferent.
